Honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki
Lorenza Mondada, professor of linguistics at the University of Basel, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki on Friday in recognition of her scientific research.
The ceremony took place over three days, from Thursday to Saturday. It was the 100th graduation ceremony, which has taken place every three to four years since 1643. Among other dignitaries, the ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, who was also honored with an honorary doctorate.
This is the third honorary doctorate conferred on Lorenza Mondada (the previous ones being from the Southern Danish University in Denmark, 2013, and the University of Linkoping in Sweden, in 2018). It is a prestigious recognition of Lorenza Mondada's career as a whole and her contributions in the field of linguistics, with special focus on multimodality, that is the relationship between language and the body in the organization of social interaction - topics for which Lorenza Mondada is regarded as a top international researcher. Lorenza Mondada has been a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences since 2017 and carried out a major research project funded by the Academy of Finland from 2015 to 2017, leading a team at the University of Helsinki where she was Distinguished Finland Professor – while continuing to teach in Basel part time. Lorenza Mondada helds the chair of General Linguistics and French Linguistics at the University of Basel since 2012.
